Archdiocese of Cusco blocks screening of film ‘Santidad’

The Archdiocese of Cusco has prevented the screening of the comedy film ‘Santidad’ in the city of Cusco. Directed by Rodolfo Espinoza and filmed entirely in the region, the movie has already premiered in various theaters across Peru, but it will not be shown in Cusco due to an intervention by the local religious authority.

According to the director, the censorship stems from a clause in the contract between the Archdiocese and the Real Plaza shopping center, which houses the Cineplanet cinema. The film is a satire of behaviors in an imaginary Andean town, featuring a character of a local archbishop obsessed with moral purity. Espinoza clarified that while the film critiques the exercise of power, it does not criticize the Church as an institution, stating, “I deeply respect believers and those who have faith in the symbols of the Church.”
