ARCON monitors digital space to prosecute advertising violators
The Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) is actively monitoring the digital space to ensure online advertising materials comply with established rules and regulations. During a media briefing in Lagos, Director General Dr. Lekan Fadolapo clarified that while the agency does not regulate the digital space itself, it focuses on regulating advertising content to ensure it receives approval from the Advertising Standards Panel (ASP) before exposure.
Addressing claims that the agency has been lenient toward online violators, Fadolapo stated that ARCON utilizes a monitoring team to identify code violations and issue sanctions. Offenders are referred to the Advertising Offences Tribunal (AOT), noting that some content creators have sought out-of-court settlements.
Additionally, preparations are underway for the National Advertising Conference (NAC), scheduled to take place in Abuja from November 11 to 13. The upcoming conference, themed ‘Repositioning The Marketing Communication Industry for the Next Frontier’, aims to increase attendance from 500 participants last year to over 700 this year.
