Antarctic Peninsula faces threat from invasive Arctic fly colonies
Scientists from the Chilean research institute Centro Internacional Cabo de Hornos have warned that an invasive Arctic fly species, Trichocera maculipennis, is now reproducing in the natural environment of the Antarctic Peninsula. While the insect had been detected in the sewage systems of scientific and military bases over the last five years, researchers observed during the recent austral summer that the flies are now completing their life cycles in the wild, specifically in caves near penguin nesting sites.
Biologist Hugo Benitez, who leads the research, suggests the species may have been introduced via tourist, scientific, or military vessels. Experts note that climate change is a primary driver, as the Antarctic Peninsula has warmed by nearly 3 degrees Celsius over the last half-century, creating more hospitable conditions for non-native species.
Previous studies published in the journal Zoologischer Anzeiger indicated the species was already adapting to the region, with research on 294 specimens showing physical changes such as decreased wing size. The expansion of this invasive species poses a potential threat to the fragile Antarctic ecosystem and local wildlife.
