Arctic sea ice melting triggers cloud-seeding chemical reactions
Researchers have discovered that melting Arctic sea ice near Greenland acts as a chemical factory that seeds cloud formation. During an expedition in the Davis Strait, atmospheric sensors recorded a massive surge in airborne particle counts, jumping from a baseline of 50 to 1,500 particles per cubic centimeter in a single afternoon.
This phenomenon is driven by reactive iodine, sulfur, and organic vapors rising from the water at the marginal ice zone, where open seawater meets retreating ice. An international team of scientists, including those from the University of Birmingham, found that new particle formation occurs on over 80% of clear, sunny days in these areas.
Because these microscopic particles serve as the foundation for cloud droplets, this process could significantly impact how scientists predict the Arctic's climate future. Understanding these chemical reactions is considered an urgent priority, as the Arctic is warming nearly four times faster than the global average.
