Arequipa prepares extensive celebrations for 486th anniversary, including highway closure for patriotic parade

Housing and community associations shut the Arequipa–La Joya highway on 20 July to stage a patriotic parade for the Fiestas Patrias, despite lacking permission from the Arequipa Regional Government. The event was organized by the Frente de Desarrollo de las Asociaciones de Vivienda, whose president David Paredes said 26 organisations and 13 schools took part, with local officials Mirtha Ruelas, mayor of Yura, and Manuel Vera, mayor of Cerro Colorado, both election candidates, attending. Regional government manager Juan Carlos Blanco confirmed no authorization had been received and said the region would assess the incident before deciding on any action.

Separately, the Arequipa municipal government released a programme of activities running from 15 July to the end of August to mark the city's 486th anniversary. The schedule includes cultural, sporting and gastronomic events such as the Festival Gastronómico “Sabores de Arequipa”, the Festival del Adobo, a fashion show, inter‑district futsal, basketball and volleyball tournaments, the selection of the city queen, concerts, parades and exhibitions, all aimed at highlighting Arequipa’s heritage and community participation.
