Peru Independence Day celebrations in Arequipa

Entities: Feria de Arequipa · Arequipa · Sergio Podestá · Colegio Independencia Americana · Teatro Contracorriente

Overview

On 10 July, more than 16 primary and secondary schools marched along Av. La Cultura in Arequipa, organized by UGEL Arequipa Sur. The event included awards for top delegations, a “Campeón de Campeones” competition slated for mid‑July, and a planned military parade on 25 July.

In the Piura region, the Regional Education Directorate cancelled civic school parades in the districts of Piura, Castilla and Veintiséis de Octubre, citing unsafe road conditions, collapsed drainage, traffic congestion, dust, high temperatures, ultraviolet exposure risk and possible political demonstrations. UGEL Talara issued preventive measures, while the municipality of Chulucanas confirmed a contingency‑planned parade for 16‑17 July.

On 20 July, housing and community associations closed the Arequipa–La Joya highway to stage a patriotic parade organized by the Frente de Desarrollo de las Asociaciones de Vivienda, involving 26 organisations and 13 schools. Regional officials noted the lack of authorization and said the incident would be reviewed. The municipal government also launched a programme of cultural, sporting and gastronomic activities running from 15 July to the end of August, featuring festivals such as “Sabores de Arequipa”, the Festival del Adobo, fashion shows, inter‑district futsal, basketball and volleyball tournaments, a city‑queen selection, concerts and additional parades.

The anniversary celebrations continued into August. The theatre group Teatro Contracorriente presented the historic play “1950”, dramatizing the 1950 student revolt, with performances on 12 August and a second showing on 22 August at Teatro Fénix. Meanwhile, the Feria de Arequipa 2026 ran from 8 to 16 August at the Cerro Juli convention centre, offering a nine‑day gastronomic route, nightly concerts, trade, technology, fashion and real‑estate exhibitions, becoming the main commercial and social focal point of the festivities.
