Peru activates air and sea bridge to rescue people stranded by landslides
The Peruvian government has activated an air and sea bridge to rescue hundreds of people stranded by massive landslides in the Arequipa region. The landslides, triggered by intense rainfall, have blocked sections of the Panamericana Sur highway, particularly in the Quebrada Honda area, leaving dozens of trucks and numerous passenger vehicles trapped.
Minister of Defense Rafael Belaúnde confirmed that the air bridge utilizes three military helicopters, which have already transported approximately 80 people. The maritime bridge is being supported by two Navy patrol boats. Evacuations are primarily occurring between the towns of Atico and Ocoña to assist the most vulnerable populations.
While some road traffic has been partially restored in certain sectors following cleaning efforts, the situation remains critical due to ongoing rainfall and the risk of further debris flows. The military has deployed hundreds of personnel to assist in clearing the roads and managing the emergency response.
