Landslides on Peru's Panamericana Sur highway

Overview

Heavy rains and the ‘DANA Aníbal’ atmospheric phenomenon have triggered landslides, mudflows, and rockfalls along the Panamericana Sur highway in Peru, specifically affecting the Atico and Ocoña sectors of the Arequipa region. The most severe damage is concentrated in the Quebrada Honda sector, where mud, water, and stones have caused a total blockade of the route between Atico and Ocoña. The Peruvian National Police (PNP) has implemented a preventive closure of the highway between kilometers 728 and 773, impacting the districts of Ocoña, Caravelí, and Atico, as well as the localities of La Florida and La Planchada. The disruption has left hundreds of vehicles, including interprovincial buses and heavy cargo trucks, stranded for several days. Travelers have reported shortages of food and water. In response, police units have provided humanitarian aid, including breakfasts, to more than 300 stranded individuals, including children and the elderly. The weather emergency has resulted in fatalities. A 64-year-old man, Carlos Espino, was found after his wife, María Jesús Rocha Parcona, passed away due to health complications while the couple attempted to navigate the blocked route on foot. Beyond the highway, intense precipitation and fog have caused power outages lasting over 15 hours in Camaná and disrupted air travel. The blockage has caused significant economic disruption, with the President of the Arequipa Chamber of Commerce estimating daily losses of approximately S/200 million. A critical shortage of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (GLP) has emerged in Arequipa and Tacna as fuel tankers remain unable to pass, prompting a government ministerial resolution declaring an emergency regarding the fuel shortage. President Keiko Fujimori has visited the affected area to supervise emergency works.
