Latin America prepares for El Niño with emergency climate response

Latin American nations are implementing emergency measures to prepare for the El Niño phenomenon, which is expected to bring extreme weather patterns.

In Argentina, the Ministry of Health has activated a contingency plan to assist over 920,000 people in high-risk zones, particularly in the Litoral, Northeast, and Buenos Aires regions, where over 5.4 million hectares are potentially floodable. In Mendoza, authorities are accelerating the maintenance of 300 kilometers of alluvial collectors to prevent flooding from summer storms.

Honduras is facing a severe drought, prompting COPECO to declare Red Alert in 75 municipalities, Yellow Alert in 71, and Green Alert in 88. President Nasry Asfura has authorized the advancement of budget transfers to help local governments address urgent needs in agricultural and water security.

Peru is preparing for both flooding and health risks. The government has authorized S/ 179.5 million to mitigate flood risks in 70 critical points across six coastal regions. Additionally, the Ministry of Health is reinforcing services to combat diseases like dengue, which may increase due to rising temperatures and rainfall. Peru is also coordinating with U.S. agencies to establish a roadmap for receiving international aid, including equipment and technical expertise, before the onset of heavy rains.
