Argentina advances electric mobility in Rosario and Buenos Aires

Argentina is advancing electric mobility initiatives in its major urban centers through vehicle conversion and financial incentives.

In Rosario, the municipality has expanded the fleet of Line K trolleybuses by adding two new units converted from diesel to electric. This project, a collaboration between the Municipality of Rosario, Movi Rosario, the National University of Rosario, and Inventu Ingeniería, utilizes the original chassis of diesel vehicles over ten years old to integrate electric motors. This conversion method costs approximately 35% of a new vehicle. Currently, 17 such units are in operation, replacing older 1994 models.

In Buenos Aires, the city government is promoting the transition to electric taxis through specialized financing. Banco Ciudad is offering credits of up to $28 million at a fixed 20% interest rate to assist drivers in purchasing electric vehicles. Official data indicates that the operating costs for electric units are roughly 20% of those for gasoline or CNG vehicles, with significantly lower maintenance requirements due to fewer moving parts. Additionally, the city provides tax benefits, including exemptions or reductions on vehicle registration fees for hybrid and electric models.
