Latin American Governments Roll Out Major Water and Infrastructure Projects

The Panama Ministry of Public Works (MOP) is mobilising technical teams to repair the pedestrian bridge on Isla Tigre in Bocas del Toro, aiming to restore safe foot traffic for local residents.

In Argentina’s La Pampa province, the Casa de Piedra irrigation scheme is advancing, with new water intakes and storage cisterns set to bring an additional 1,000 hectares under irrigated production, boosting agricultural activity and jobs.

Chile’s MOP has inaugurated rehabilitation works on the Bellavista Canal in the Coquimbo region, installing concrete lining and automated gates to curb water losses and improve distribution amid a decade‑long megadrought. Simultaneously, in the Aysén region, the agency began channel‑straightening works on the Mosco River to protect Villa O’Higgins from winter flooding.

Ecuador’s Guayaquil municipality, together with the Development Bank of Latin America (CAF), is constructing the first segment of the Fifth Aqueduct, a 21.4‑km pipeline system that will extend potable water service to about 500,000 inhabitants in the city’s northwest.

A separate water‑system upgrade in Mexico’s El Realito will replace 13.5 km of aging pipe with high‑density polyethylene, improving reliability for thousands of households.
