Latin America water infrastructure upgrades continue

Entities: Javier Iud · Juan Pablo Valdés · Aguas Rionegrinas · Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF) · Luján River Basin Committee

Overview

Municipalities and utilities across Latin America have intensified water‑supply, drainage and related works through July 2026. In Argentina, channel dredging and reinforcement in Chacabuco now cover more than 10,000 ha, with four kilometres cleared, while the Buenos Aires provincial hydraulic directorate completed three kilometres of cleaning in Saladillo. The Chubut province began construction of the major storm‑drain conduit in Comodoro Rivadavia valued at over ARS 16.7 billion and, together with Río Negro, launched a 33 kV, 26‑km underground electricity line to replace the El Bolsón thermal plant, an investment exceeding ARS 17 billion. The province’s education council also coordinated technical‑professional education initiatives. Junín finished its potable‑water network expansion in the 11 de Julio neighbourhood after a 55‑year request, and school‑facility upgrades continued in Trenque Lauquen and Tanti. Rosario’s 120‑day public tender for a new potable‑water network in its northeastern neighbourhood proceeded as announced, aiming to connect homes long without reliable service.

In Colombia, Veolia cleared roughly 50 km of urban canals in Montería and urged residents to keep channels free of waste. The towns of Jerusalem, Guataquí and Nariño inaugurated a solar‑powered water‑supply system, cutting operating costs and emissions. Fusagasugá began construction of a new sewer system in the Jordán Medio neighbourhood after 28 years of waiting, improving sanitation for about 150 families.

Newly added, the Buenos Aires Province Ministry of Infrastructure opened a public consultation on 4 August 2026 for a 5.334 billion‑peso flood‑control scheme on the Luján River in Mercedes, funded by the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF). The project will build advanced hydraulic works and an urban drainage system to protect riverbank neighborhoods from overflow.

These actions build on earlier upgrades in Chile, Brazil, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Panama, Puerto Rico and elsewhere, reinforcing regional water security and flood resilience.
