Winter Swimming World Cup 2026 draws 300 athletes to El Calafate

The 2026 Winter Swimming World Cup took place from 2 to 9 August in El Calafate, Patagonia, under the International Winter Swimming Association (IWSA). More than 300 swimmers from 15 countries competed in water temperatures ranging from 0 °C to 3 °C in a specially installed 25‑metre floating pool on Lake Argentino, without wetsuits.

The event was streamed live worldwide, expanding its global audience. Santa Cruz provincial minister Nadia Ricci highlighted the competition’s role in promoting winter tourism, noting increased hotel occupancy, restaurant activity and local commerce during a traditionally off‑season period. The World Cup also serves as a preparatory step for the 2028 Winter Swimming World Championship, which will be hosted again in El Calafate.

Organisers emphasized strict safety protocols, including medical checks and post‑race thermal recovery in saunas. The competition’s success positions the region as a premier venue for extreme cold‑water sports and underscores its growing economic and sporting significance.
