Argentina and Peru update national ID renewal and cancellation rules

Argentina's Registro Civil announced that the new format of the Documento Nacional de Identidad (DNI) will be mandatory from 1 February 2026. Renewal will be required for age updates at five, eight or 14 years, for expiration, for civil procedures such as adoption or gender change, and for loss, theft or change of address. The regular renewal costs $10 000, while an express service costs $26 000 with five‑day delivery.

Peru's Registro Nacional de Identificación y Estado Civil (Reniec) detailed the procedure to cancel the DNI of a deceased person. After the death is officially registered, the family must present the death certificate, the deceased’s DNI (or a sworn statement if lost), and their own ID at a Reniec office. The cancellation removes the record from the electoral roll and prevents legal and administrative complications for heirs, insurance claims and pension benefits.

Both measures aim to keep national identification registers accurate and to reduce misuse of identity documents.
