Peru digital ID rollout and election preparedness
Overview
As the October 4, 2026, regional and municipal elections approach, the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (Reniec) is facilitating identity document access. To support voters, the agency has processed over 351,000 online duplicate DNI requests for adults as of August 2026. Citizens can utilize the official Reniec website for these requests, using the DNI BioFacial mobile application for identity validation and facial photography when migrating to an electronic DNI. Payments for duplicates can be made via Banco de la Nación, BCP, Yape, or credit/debit cards.
In response to the upcoming elections, Reniec has expanded its service availability. Following special hours in Arequipa on September 5, the agency scheduled additional weekend services for September 12 and 13. On Saturday, September 12, 112 agencies will operate nationwide, covering regions such as Piura, La Libertad, Lima, Cusco, and Loreto, among others. On Sunday, September 13, 13 centers in Piura, Lambayeque, Tumbes, Lima, and Puno will remain open from 8:15 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. to allow citizens to collect their documents. Reniec advises citizens to verify document readiness on its official website before visiting.
While Reniec maintains that the DNI is the only valid document for voting, resolution 000023-2026-RENIEC/JNAC provides exceptions. For the October elections, voters will be permitted to use expired DNIs, DNIs nearing expiration, or minor (yellow) DNIs.
