Argentina announces citizenship by investment program

Argentina has announced a new “citizenship by investment” program, intended to attract foreign capital and strengthen the nation's fiscal position. Announced by Economy Minister Luis Caputo and Chief of Staff Diego Santilli in Paris, the initiative is expected to begin accepting applications in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Under the program, primary applicants can obtain citizenship through two main routes: a non-refundable $350,000 contribution to the National Treasury or a $800,000 subscription to a specific government bond. The program also allows for family inclusion, with spouses and unmarried children aged 18 to 25 requiring a $100,000 contribution each, and children under 18 requiring $25,000.

To ensure security and prevent money laundering, the government stated that all applicants will undergo rigorous due diligence, including identity verification, financial scrutiny, and criminal background checks.

The announcement has faced political opposition. Legislators, including Deputy Agustín Rossi, have introduced projects to prohibit the sale of citizenship, arguing that nationality should not be a commodity and that residency requirements should remain mandatory.
