Argentina announces citizenship by investment program

The Argentine government, led by President Javier Milei, has announced a Citizenship by Investment (CBI) program scheduled to launch in the fourth quarter of 2026. Announced by Economy Minister Luis Caputo and Chief of Cabinet Diego Santilli, the program offers foreign investors two primary paths to citizenship: a non-refundable contribution of $350,000 to the National Treasury or a $800,000 investment in specific government securities.

Family members can be included through additional contributions: $100,000 for spouses and unmarried children aged 18 to 25, and $25,000 for children under 18. The program will be overseen by an agency that evaluates applicants based on security, background, and the origin of funds.

Reports indicate that Henley & Partners, a firm specializing in golden passports, has been advising the Argentine government for approximately 18 months on the regulatory framework. While the government views the program as a way to attract capital, some experts suggest the model aligns more closely with Caribbean investment programs than sophisticated European models, noting that direct contributions to the state differ from investments in productive infrastructure or local businesses.
