Argentina authorizes new genetically modified soybean variety

The Argentine Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, and Fisheries (SAGYP) has authorized the commercialization of a new genetically modified soybean variety. Developed by Syngenta, the seed features multiple tolerances to four types of herbicides: glyphosate, glufosinate ammonium, 2,4-D, and HPPD enzyme inhibitors.

The new variety was created through the conventional crossing of two previously authorized biotechnological events. This technology aims to provide farmers with more diverse tools for weed control, though authorities noted that integrated weed management remains essential to prevent herbicide resistance.

Regulatory evaluations by the National Advisory Commission on Agricultural Biotechnology (Conabia) concluded that the new soybean presents no new or increased risks compared to existing commercial varieties. Additionally, the National Service for Agri-Food Health and Quality (Senasa) determined the product is as safe and nutritious for human and animal consumption as conventional soybeans.
