Argentina bans dumpling-shaped squishy toys over toxic chemical risks

The Argentine government has prohibited the import, manufacture, sale, and storage of certain soft toys known as ‘squishy’ dumplings, effective August 31, 2026. The measure, issued via Disposition 690/2026 by the Subsecretaría de Defensa del Consumidor y Lealtad Comercial, follows reports of potentially dangerous levels of benzene, phthalates, and other toxic chemicals in these products.

The ban specifically targets soft plastic polymer toys shaped like gyoza, dumplings, or similar items. Identified commercial names include ‘Squeezy Duplings’, ‘Dumpling Squishy’, ‘Dumpling Squishy Viral con Glitter y Orbis’, and ‘Dumpling Squishy con Steamer Box’, as well as various generic unbranded versions. Authorities noted that these substances pose risks through skin contact or inhalation, citing similar alerts previously issued in the United Kingdom.

Importers, manufacturers, and retailers are required to destroy or safely discard non-compliant stock. An exception is made for those who can provide sworn declarations of conformity and certifications proving the products meet safety and toxicity standards. Retailers must also inform consumers of the ban on their websites within 72 business hours.
