Argentina bans Squeezy Dumpling stress toy over benzene risk

Argentina's consumer protection agency ordered the immediate removal of the soft‑stress toy known as “Squeezy Dumpling” after tests revealed benzene levels far above legal limits. The Directorate of Consumer Defense and Commercial Loyalty, part of the provincial Ministry of Government in San Luis, cited concentrations that exceed the 5 mg/kg threshold, posing a serious carcinogenic hazard through inhalation or skin contact.

The alert originated from the United Kingdom, where a specific model was found to contain 20 mg of benzene per kilogram. Argentine authorities, referencing the same safety standards, initiated a preventive market withdrawal and instructed retailers to stop sales and display of the product. Pediatrician Vanina Solari explained that while benzene is common in many industrial materials, the danger lies in the excessive amount detected on the toy’s outer coating.

The recall affects children’s toys sold across Argentina and underscores stricter enforcement of import and labeling requirements, which the product also failed to meet.
