Argentina beef producers face new labor requirements for sustainability certification

The Mesa Argentina de Carne Sustentable (MACS) and the Registro Nacional de Trabajadores Rurales y Empleadores (RENATRE) have signed an agreement establishing new labor requirements for beef sustainability certification in Argentina.

To obtain the MACS sustainability seal, livestock establishments must now first secure the RENATRE Business Certification for Sustainable Labor Practices (PLS). This certification will be integrated into the MACS indicator for ‘Working Conditions and Worker Rights.’ While the PLS remains a voluntary tool for rural companies in general, it is now a mandatory prerequisite for any entity seeking the specific MACS sustainability label.

The initiative aims to enhance the social traceability of Argentine beef, addressing global market demands for environmental, sanitary, and social responsibility guarantees. The certification process verifies compliance with labor laws, including formal employment registration, occupational health and safety, training, union freedom, and the prevention of child labor and exploitation.
