South American livestock markets show firm beef prices and buffalo growth

The South American livestock sector is experiencing varied trends in beef and buffalo production. In Brazil, cattle prices have remained firm, with the fat cow (vaca gorda) reaching R$ 330 in Santa Catarina and beef cattle prices stabilizing around R$ 340 in the Feira de Santana region. Brazil is also consolidating its position as the third-largest global exporter of pork, with production projected to reach 5.87 million tons in 2026. Additionally, genetic advancements in buffalo breeding have led to a 116% increase in annual milk production for animals born between 2022 and 2025.

In Argentina, the buffalo industry is expanding significantly, with the national stock reaching 205,000 heads—a 25.3% increase since 2023. Production is concentrated in the Northeast region, particularly in Corrientes, Formosa, and Chaco. Meanwhile, the Uruguayan cattle market remains firm, with active demand and sustained prices for various categories, including steers and cows, despite a recent decline in the number of animals slaughtered.

In the Brazilian calf market, prices for the arroba of the calf saw a notable increase in early August, driven by a decrease in the average sale weight of animals.
