Uruguay and Paraguay livestock markets show strong demand
Overview
Uruguay’s livestock and wool markets have maintained stability and firm pricing despite supply constraints. While annual slaughter totals for cattle and sheep remained down double-digits compared to 2025, weekly slaughter volumes showed sharp increases during the winter campaign. The wool sector reported a strong 2025/2026 harvest, with premium Merino fibers reaching US$10–11 per kilogram.
Despite recent downturns in processing volumes reported by the National Meat Institute (INAC), auction demand remains robust. In late August 2026, the Agronegocios Sarandí auction achieved a 97.86% sales rate for 6,495 head of cattle. Sector activity is expanding through major exhibitions and auctions, such as the Rural del Prado exhibition and Plaza Rural’s 237th auction.
Adding to this momentum, Valdés y Cía. is resuming its livestock and sheep auctions at the Ancina location following two postponements due to weather and sanitary issues. The upcoming sale includes approximately 450 cattle, 50 horses, and 100 sheep. Commercial manager Ricardo Pigurina noted high expectations for the event. In preparation for Expo Prado, the firm is introducing ‘Casa Valdéz’, a new business-focused space for client engagement, while also launching a new branch in Montevideo.
Regional trends also show strength in Paraguay, where the 16th televised elite breeder fair for Ganadera La Blanca achieved a 100% sales rate, highlighting high demand for genetics, specifically Senepol bulls.
