Argentina CNV introduces new regulations for virtual asset service providers

The National Securities Commission (CNV) of Argentina has implemented new regulatory frameworks for virtual asset service providers (VASPs) through General Resolution 1172/2026. Effective October 16, 2026, the regulation prohibits exchanges from offering mixers and mandates monthly reporting starting November 1.

The new rules aim to align with FATF standards and include strict requirements for client identity verification, fund origin tracking, and transactional profiling. VASPs must maintain documentation for ten years and ensure the separation of client assets from company assets, including public proof of reserves and cold storage requirements.

Additionally, the regulation mandates that new tokens with less than 90 days of history be offered in specific sections with warnings. Providers must also report relevant facts, such as security incidents or losses exceeding 15% of net equity. Separately, the CNV has opened a public consultation regarding the modernization of the relevant facts regime under General Resolution 1171/2026, which affects administrators, controlling shareholders, and market agents.
