Argentina confirms H5 avian influenza in Buenos Aires poultry
The National Service for Agri-Food Health and Quality (Senasa) has confirmed a case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5) in backyard poultry in Carlos Spegazzini, Buenos Aires province. The detection followed reports of bird mortality at a local property, with laboratory tests confirming the virus in ducks and chickens.
Authorities have established a 3-kilometer prevention zone around the affected site. Within this area, biocontainment measures and epidemiological tracking will be implemented to identify potential links and prevent further spread.
Senasa stated that this finding does not change Argentina’s status as a country free of highly pathogenic avian influenza. Officials also clarified that the virus is not transmitted through the consumption of poultry products, such as meat or eggs. Producers have been advised to strengthen biosecurity protocols, including controlling the movement of people and vehicles, increasing disinfection, and preventing contact between wild birds and domestic flocks.
