Avian influenza outbreaks in South America

Overview

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5) has been detected in domestic poultry across different regions of South America.

In September 2026, Argentina’s National Service for Agri-Food Health and Quality (Senasa) confirmed cases in backyard poultry, specifically ducks and chickens, in Carlos Spegazzini, Buenos Aires province. In response, authorities established a 3-kilometer prevention zone and implemented biocontainment measures. Officials noted that the finding did not alter Argentina’s status as a country free of highly pathogenic avian influenza and clarified that the virus is not transmitted through poultry products.

By October 2026, authorities in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, reported that an outbreak in the municipality of Selbach had been officially contained. The virus was initially confirmed in domestic birds at a subsistence property in the Alto Jacuí region. Following an intensive sanitary sweep of 70 rural properties within a 10-kilometer perimeter, no new symptoms or suspected cases were identified. Local authorities have maintained heightened surveillance and biosecurity awareness campaigns.
