Argentina faces rising provincial debt and household financial strain

Argentina is facing significant economic pressures characterized by rising provincial debt maturities and increasing household financial instability. In August 2026, provincial public title maturities reached $811,571 million, with Buenos Aires province accounting for 67.9% ($551,462 million) and Chaco following with $108,038 million. These payments primarily consisted of capital amortizations (84%) and interest (16%).

On the consumer side, credit card financing saw a 10.1% real year-on-year decline in August, as households increasingly struggle with debt. Approximately 48.2% of surveyed individuals identify credit cards as their primary debt source, and 77.2% reported using new debt to pay off existing obligations over the last six months.

In Buenos Aires province, the housing crisis is driving financial distress; 21.5% of tenant households reported forced moves due to inability to afford rent, and 78.5% of tenants reported having active debts. This economic strain is also reflected in declining supermarket sales, which fell 7.3% year-on-year in the province, with significant drops in clothing and cleaning supplies.
