Argentina debt crunch deepens amid record delinquency

Entities: Argentina · Banco Central de la República Argentina (BCRA) · Santiago Castro · Chile · Tesorería General de la República (TGR)

Overview

By late July 2026 the crisis intensified further. CEPA data released on 26 July showed private‑sector loan delinquency reaching a historic 7.6 % in May, with 5.8 million of the 20.9 million debtors in arrears. Young adults were hardest hit – delinquency hit 40.9 % among those under 24. The Cuyo and Northwest regions continued to lead, with La Rioja, San Luis and Catamarca posting delinquency above 20 %. On 28 July Banco Nación announced a 10‑year refinancing scheme for households, allowing consolidation of overdue credit into a single payment of up to ARS 100 million, offered at fixed or UVA‑linked rates and automatically cancelling existing credit‑card and personal‑loan obligations. In Santa Fe, deputy Gisel Mahmud pushed a bill to create an Extrajudicial Debt Sanitation Service to bundle all family debts and strengthen consumer‑education.
