Argentina faces rising household debt and credit delinquency

Argentina is experiencing a significant surge in household and private sector debt delinquency. Reports indicate that credit delinquency for individuals has increased nearly fivefold since late 2024, reaching 17.5% by June 2026. Household default rates specifically hit 12.8% in May, the highest level in two decades.

Regional data shows varying levels of distress. La Rioja recorded the highest delinquency rate by amount at 24.5%, while Tierra del Fuego saw a sharp rise in irregular debtors, reaching over 26,000 people in June. In Olavarría, non-financial credit providers reported delinquency rates as high as 44.63%.

The Argentine government has rejected calls for direct financial assistance to debtors. Presidential spokesperson Adrián Ravier stated that the administration will not implement a “plan platita” (money plan) to assist those in arrears, instead focusing on reducing inflation and encouraging banks to offer refinancing options. Meanwhile, some legislative proposals in Buenos Aires province suggest creating extraordinary regimes to allow families to refinance debts over up to 60 months.
