Argentina debates potential repeal of food labeling law

Legislative initiatives have resurfaced in Argentina proposing to modify or repeal Law No. 27.642, the National Law for the Promotion of Healthy Eating, which established the black octagonal warning labels on food packaging.

The debate involves nutrition specialists, scientific organizations, food industry representatives, and government officials. The organization PROFENI (Experts in Child Nutrition) argues that the discussion should move beyond simply maintaining or removing the octagons. Instead, they suggest advancing toward a nutritional information system based on the latest scientific evidence to allow for more precise product comparisons and better consumer decision-making.

This legislative tension occurs amid national health concerns, with data from the Ministry of Health and the National Survey of Risk Factors indicating that more than six in ten people in Argentina suffer from overweight or obesity, alongside persistent deficiencies in nutrients such as iron, calcium, vitamin D, and fiber.
