Argentine food regulation and labeling legislation

Argentina has seen recent legislative activity regarding food production and labeling regulations.

In July, the Argentine Congress approved Law 15.475, which prohibits the production and sale of food obtained through forced-feeding techniques, such as those used to produce foie gras. The ban applies to both fresh and processed products and will take effect 180 days after publication. Violations may result in fines, seizure of goods, and up to one year of imprisonment.

By August, legislative discussions shifted toward the potential repeal or modification of Law No. 27.642, the National Law for the Promotion of Healthy Eating. This law established black octagonal warning labels on food packaging. The debate includes nutrition specialists, the food industry, and government officials, with some experts advocating for a more advanced nutritional information system to address national health concerns regarding obesity and nutrient deficiencies.
