Argentina faces rising household debt and fintech interest rate protests
Argentina is facing a significant surge in household debt, with nearly half of the 45 million population owing money and over 5 million people behind on payments. This crisis is particularly acute among young people under 25, who hold the highest delinquency rate at 37.6%.
Social organizations, including Libres del Sur and Movimiento Evita, have staged protests against high interest rates charged by traditional banks and fintech platforms like Mercado Pago. Protesters are demanding interest rate caps aligned with annual inflation and the refinancing of exorbitant debts. They argue that fintech profitability is being driven by high household indebtedness.
In response to the economic pressure, opposition lawmakers have called for special congressional sessions to consider debt renegotiation measures and interest-rate regulations. Meanwhile, the banking sector reports increased tension, with employees facing violence and insults from customers struggling with scams and economic hardship.
In the automotive sector, Toyota Argentina has introduced a new UVA-based financing line with a TNA of 13.9% to compete in the credit market.
