Argentina economy faces technical recession risk amid industrial decline

Argentina is facing a potential technical recession as economic activity remains stagnant. Following a 2.9% contraction in July, the Monthly Estimator of Economic Activity (EMAE) showed a mere 0.1% recovery in August, failing to offset previous losses. To avoid a technical recession—defined as two consecutive quarters of decline—the economy would require a significant growth surge in September.

The industrial and manufacturing sectors are experiencing severe downturns. Manufacturing activity fell 3.2% year-on-year in August, and the metalworking sector has seen a 5.6% decline so far in 2026. The construction sector is also struggling, with an annual decrease of 4.4% in August, driven by the halt of public works and reduced purchasing power.

Labor markets are deteriorating, with formal private employment recording 14 consecutive months of decline. Since November 2023, approximately 266,000 formal jobs have been lost. While the energy sector, particularly oil and mining, shows resilience and growth, these gains have not been sufficient to stabilize the broader economy, which is characterized by weakened domestic consumption and high industrial idleness.
