Argentina inflation trends and provincial fiscal shifts

Overview

In August 2026, Argentina’s National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC) reported that monthly inflation slowed to 1.7%, the lowest monthly increase in 14 months. This deceleration follows a 2.1% rate recorded in July. The annual inflation rate stands at 33.5%, while year-to-date inflation has reached 21.3%.

Key price drivers for August included housing, water, electricity, gas, and other fuels, which saw a 2.8% increase, followed by education at 2.5%. Regulated prices rose by 2.2%, driven by electricity, gas, and public transport. Clothing and footwear was the only category to experience a price decrease, falling by 0.6%. Core inflation remained at 1.8%.

Despite the inflationary slowdown, economic indicators highlight ongoing challenges. While President Javier Milei and Economy Minister Luis Caputo have characterized the cooling inflation as a “significant milestone,” other metrics suggest persistent pressure on consumers. Specifically, the cost of basic food and total basic baskets (CBA and CBT) rose by 2.6% in August, outpacing the general inflation rate. The Basic Food Basket (CBA) has seen a year-on-year increase of 39.6%.

Furthermore, the manufacturing Industrial Production Index fell 5% in July, contributing to a 2.6% contraction in the industrial sector during the first seven months of the year. Concurrently, fiscal shifts continue to impact provinces; according to the Instituto Argentino de Análisis Fiscal (Iaraf), discretionary transfers from the national government fell 66.4% in real terms year-on-year in August. Additionally, reports from the ATE union indicate that public sector wages have fallen by 40.5% during the current administration, contributing to increased household debt.
