Argentina economic activity falls 1.7% in August amid recession fears

Argentina's economic activity, measured by the Monthly Estimator of Economic Activity (EMAE), fell 1.7% year-on-year in August 2026. While the seasonally adjusted figure showed a marginal 0.1% increase compared to July, the contraction follows a 0.6% decline in the second quarter, placing the country at risk of a technical recession if September data does not show a significant rebound.

The downturn was widespread, affecting ten of the fifteen surveyed sectors. Notable declines included fishing (-15.7%), financial intermediation (-3.8%), manufacturing (-3.2%), and construction (-2.5%). Conversely, the mining and petroleum sector grew by 11.1%, and electricity, gas, and water services rose by 4.3%.

Consumer spending remains under severe pressure. Supermarket sales fell 3.7% year-on-year in August, marking the eighth consecutive month of decline. Although nominal sales in pesos rose by 24.2% due to inflation, real volumes decreased. A survey by Brain Network revealed that 82% of Argentines struggle to make ends meet, with 21% described as “desbordados” (overwhelmed) due to insufficient income and recurring debt.
