Argentina faces rising household and business debt crisis

Argentina is facing a severe debt crisis as household and business delinquency rates rise. According to reports from the Central Bank of Argentina (BCRA) and the Center for Political Economy of Argentina (CEPA), over 92% of Argentine households are currently carrying debt.

Family credit delinquency reached 12.8% in June 2026, more than doubling from 5.2% in June 2025. A particularly sharp increase was observed in the use of virtual wallets, where delinquency jumped from 7.3% in November 2024 to 30.1% in June 2026, surpassing pandemic-era highs.

The nature of the debt is shifting; rather than financing durable goods, approximately 62.5% of credit card usage is now dedicated to essential goods like food and medicine. This structural indebtedness is compounded by high interest rates, with some digital lending platforms reportedly offering annual rates as high as 29,000%.

In the corporate sector, the irregularity coefficient stood at 3.5%. While banks have seen a reduction in the number of debtors, there is a notable migration toward non-traditional financial providers and digital wallets, which are seeing higher rates of default.
