Argentina faces irregular disinflation and economic challenges

Argentina is experiencing an irregular disinflation process under the administration of Javier Milei. While monthly inflation dropped from a peak of 25.5% in December 2023 to 2.1% in July 2026, the trajectory has been marked by fluctuations. Analysts note that the annual inflation rate has struggled to break below a 30% floor, with many projections suggesting 2026 will end with inflation exceeding 30%.

Economic analyses suggest that the achievement of fiscal balance has been driven by several controversial measures. These include the reduction of purchasing power through the liquidation of pensions and wages, the near-total halt of public works, and reduced transfers to provinces. Additionally, the use of an exchange rate anchor and the postponement of payments for supplies and completed works have been cited as methods to control prices.

Experts warn that these measures may have long-term consequences for production, employment, and infrastructure. A cycle is emerging where falling sales lead to lower prices but also reduced demand for labor, which in turn impacts wages, purchasing power, and tax revenue. There are also concerns regarding the future of the country's 43,000-kilometer road network due to the lack of reconstruction funds.
