Argentina faces rising protests over economic hardship and debt

Argentina is experiencing a surge in political and social mobilization driven by economic discontent and opposition to President Javier Milei's administration. Between September 16 and 19, various political factions are scheduled to hold demonstrations, including the ‘Marcha de la Bronca’ organized by the Left Front (FIT) and gatherings by the Movimiento Derecho al Futuro and the Frente Renovador.

Simultaneously, social unrest is manifesting through direct action against the financial sector. The Movimiento de Familias Endeudadas recently staged protests at major banks and the Central Bank in Buenos Aires. The group is demanding more reasonable debt refinancing conditions, accusing banks of charging exorbitant interest rates and harassing families. They have also criticized the Milei government for its perceived complicity in the rising debt crisis.

Economic indicators reflect this tension, with family delinquency rates reportedly rising from 2.8 percent in December 2023 to 12.9 percent in June 2024, affecting approximately 6 million people.
