Argentina economy faces contraction with falling employment and business closures

Argentina is experiencing a significant economic downturn characterized by declining industrial activity, falling employment, and widespread business closures. Since November 2023, registered private sector employment has dropped by 3.9%, representing a loss of approximately 246,312 jobs. In June alone, the sector lost 6,261 positions, bringing formal employment to its lowest level in 50 months.

Industrial and construction sectors are facing severe contractions. Manufacturing and construction have seen substantial job losses, with the former losing over 50,000 positions in the last year. The business landscape is also shrinking; between November 2023 and May 2026, 30,633 registered companies closed. In the province of Buenos Aires, over 3,165 commercial and productive establishments have ceased operations.

Consumer trends reflect the economic strain. Private consumption fell 0.6% in August, marking the ninth consecutive monthly decline. Beef consumption per capita has also dropped to 46 kg annually, a 9.5% year-on-year decrease, reaching its lowest level since 2005. While the agriculture, energy, and mining sectors generated US$ 47,099 million in revenue in 2025, public investment in infrastructure remains disproportionately low compared to these earnings.
