Argentina: Gender violence emergency demands in Santa Fe and Salta

Feminist organizations and legislative bodies in Argentina are addressing rising gender violence. In Santa Fe, the Asamblea Ni Una Menos and Mumalá are demanding a declaration of emergency in gender violence at both provincial and national levels. Activists cite alarming statistics, noting 32 femicides and 62 attempted femicides in the province between January and August 2026. They argue that the current administration has weakened institutional support by dissolving the national Ministry of Women, Gender, and Diversity and reducing provincial budgets.

In Salta, the provincial Senate has granted semi-approval to extend the gender violence emergency status for an additional two years. The initiative, sponsored by Senators Alejandra Navarro and Leonor Minetti, now moves to the Chamber of Deputies. During the debate, officials reported seven femicides and approximately 13,000 complaints filed during the first half of the year. The extension aims to secure the institutional framework and budget necessary for prevention and assistance programs.
