Gender violence emergency demands in Argentina

Overview

In Rosario and across Argentina, feminist organizations and legislative bodies are intensifying demands for a declaration of emergency regarding gender-based violence. Following high-profile femicides in Rosario, activists such as the Asamblea Lesbotransfeminista and Ni Una Menos have marched under the slogan ‘Nuestras vidas están en emergencia’ (Our lives are in emergency).

In the province of Santa Fe, organizations including Mumalá are calling for both provincial and national emergency declarations. They cite statistics showing 32 femicides and 62 attempted femicides in the province between January and August 2026. Activists argue that the current administration has weakened institutional support by dissolving the national Ministry of Women, Gender, and Diversity and reducing provincial budgets.

In Salta, the provincial Senate has moved toward extending the gender violence emergency status for an additional two years. Sponsored by Senators Alejandra Navarro and Leonor Minetti, the initiative has passed to the Chamber of Deputies. During the legislative debate, officials reported seven femicides and approximately 13,000 complaints filed during the first half of the year. The extension is intended to secure the budget and institutional framework required for prevention and assistance programs.

These developments follow data from the observatory ‘Ahora Que Sí Nos Ven’, which reported 147 femicides and 234 attempted femicides in Argentina between January and July 2026. Researchers have attributed the surge to a national context of ‘discursive cruelty and the withdrawal of the State’ in preventing violence.
