Argentina government seeks Senate support to suspend PASO elections

The Argentine government, led by President Javier Milei, is intensifying efforts to secure legislative support for two major initiatives: a comprehensive electoral reform and the 2027 National Budget. A central component of the electoral reform is the proposed suspension or elimination of the PASO (Primaries, Open, Simultaneous, and Mandatory) elections, which are estimated to cost approximately 250 million dollars.

Chief of Cabinet Diego Santilli is spearheading negotiations with provincial governors to build a consensus. While some governors, including those from Catamarca, Neuquén, Chaco, Corrientes, and Chubut, have expressed support for suspending the PASO, the government still lacks the necessary 37 votes in the Senate to pass the reform. Currently, the ruling La Libertad Avanza party holds 21 Senate seats.

Opposition remains significant, with the PRO and certain sectors of the Unión Cívica Radical (UCR) opposing the suspension of the primaries. The proposed reform also includes changes to party financing, the implementation of 'Ficha Limpia', and modifications to the single paper ballot system. The administration aims to reach a legislative consensus by October to ensure stability ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle.
