Argentina to enforce 75% school coverage during national teachers' strike
The Argentine government, through the Ministry of Capital Human headed by Sandra Pettovello, has ratified the requirement that at least 75 % of the normal educational service be maintained during the national teachers' strike scheduled for Monday 3 August 2026. The mandate is based on Law 27.802, article 101, which designates education as an essential service.
A meeting of the Council Federal de Educación was held on Sunday to coordinate random inspections in schools across all provinces. The executive committee, representing national and provincial education authorities, confirmed the 75 % floor and agreed that territorial agencies will collect data, conduct spot checks and compile a national report. The executive branch warned that any union that fails to meet the coverage threshold will face the protocols for sanctions established by the law.
The strike was called by the Confederación de Trabajadores de la Educación de la República Argentina (CTERA) and is supported by a range of teacher unions, including ADOSAC, AMET, AMSAFE, and others. It will affect public schools nationwide and some university units, while private schools are largely exempt. The government’s oversight aims to safeguard the right to education and provide predictability for families during the protest.
