Argentina labor unrest widens: pension and strike actions

Overview

President Javier Milei’s austerity measures continue to spark broad labour unrest. After the CGT‑CTA‑UTEP agreement to restart coordinated protests following the World Cup, a decree on 17 July removed the 2 % ceiling on extraordinary employer contributions to union “boxes,” a move praised by the CGT and criticised by other unions. On 22 July thousands of retirees marched on the National Congress and staged demonstrations in Formosa, Entre Ríos and other provinces, joined by the CGT, the two CTA federations, UTEP and dozens of social groups. Their demands include higher pensions, restoration of the pension‑adjustment moratorium, full medicine coverage through PAMI and the reinstatement of the “Volver al Trabajo” cash‑transfer programme. Union leaders such as Camioneros head Pablo Moyano, ATE and AJER condemned Milei’s labour reform as regressive and warned of further strikes. In late July the Unión Obrera Metalúrgica (UOM) and the Federación de Sindicatos (FreSU) outlined coordinated action plans. The UOM discussed replicating the “Matanza” seccional model nationwide and improving its union‑run health‑insurance scheme (Obra Social). FreSU set a calendar of actions through August‑September, including a joint talk with ATE Córdoba, a nationwide strike of state workers and teachers, a hybrid hearing before the Inter‑American Commission on Human Rights, protests against a proposed land‑expropriation law, a march to San Cayetano, the launch of a new FreSU index and an industry‑day demonstration. On 31 July the Asociación Trabajadores del Estado (ATE) formally notified the Ministry of Labour that it will hold a national strike on 3 August, joined by the Confederación de Trabajadores de la Educación de la Argentina (CTERA).
