Argentina health experts warn of insect proliferation due to Super Niño

Health specialists in Argentina are warning of a potential surge in insect populations, including mosquitoes, spiders, and cockroaches, driven by the Super Niño climate phenomenon. The combination of rising temperatures, increased humidity, and heavy rainfall is creating ideal breeding conditions for various pests.

In Mendoza, authorities have noted that high temperatures and moisture allow more insect eggs to reach full development. A primary concern is the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the vector for dengue, Zika, and chikungunya. Infectious disease specialist Dr. Hugo Pizzi noted that while dengue outbreaks can be cyclical, the current meteorological fluctuations and increased rainfall provide a highly favorable environment for mosquito proliferation.

To mitigate risks, experts recommend maintaining short grass, eliminating standing water in yards, and using mosquito netting on windows and cribs.
