Argentina faces surge in household debt and delinquency
Argentina is facing a significant surge in household debt and delinquency. Reports from the Centro de Economía Política Argentina (CEPA) indicate that non-bank credit delinquency reached 33.9% in July 2026, a sharp increase from 7.3% in late 2024. Bank delinquency has also climbed from 2.5% to 13% during the same period.
Data from the Instituto Argentina Grande (IAG) shows that unrecoverable debtors—those with arrears exceeding one year—grew by 60% in a single year, totaling approximately 3.4 million people. This group represents 16.8% of all debtors in the country. Many of these individuals struggle with small, everyday financial obligations rather than large consumer purchases.
Other surveys highlight the breadth of the crisis: 82% of households report having at least one debt, and 36% are unable to meet their payment commitments. Common debt sources include installment purchases, loans from friends or family, and digital wallet or app-based loans. Advocacy groups like Endeudados Organizados are calling for a 180-day credit emergency to provide relief to the millions of citizens currently in arrears.
