Argentina household debt reaches critical levels amid rising delinquency

Argentina is facing a significant surge in household debt and delinquency. Reports indicate that 92.3% of households are currently in debt, with nearly half of these obligations remaining outside the Central Bank's formal records due to informal lending, unpaid rent, and local commerce credit. Approximately 5.86 million individuals have overdue payments, with a particularly high delinquency rate among those under 25.

In response to the crisis, Senator Patricia Bullrich has criticized the lack of transparency regarding the Total Financial Cost (CFT) of loans, labeling it a 'robbery' when costs are obscured in fine print. She has proposed a 'front-end labeling' system to clearly display the total amount a borrower will eventually repay. Additionally, Bullrich has called on both traditional banks and fintech companies to take responsibility for the rising delinquency rates by offering their own debt refinancing schemes, arguing that the state should not absorb these operational losses.

Regional data shows varying levels of impact; for instance, in Buenos Aires, the La Boca neighborhood exhibits a 25.5% delinquency rate, significantly higher than the 9.1% seen in Núñez. Meanwhile, in Salta, authorities have reported over 2,500 consumer complaints related to aggressive collection practices and inflated debt claims.
