Argentina faces rising household debt and credit delinquency
Argentina is experiencing a significant rise in household debt and delinquency, driven by declining purchasing power and high interest rates. Approximately 5.9 million people in the country are currently in a state of credit delinquency. 13% of household loans in the banking system are irregular, though some officials suggest this may be reaching a peak.
Credit cards have become a central component of this crisis. A survey by Inteligencia Analítica found that 48.2% of respondents identify credit cards as their primary debt, yet only 36% were able to pay their full statement balance last month. Many households are increasingly using new debt to cover essential living expenses like food and housing, or to pay off previous obligations.
Regional data shows varying levels of impact. In Neuquén, over 93,000 people are in arrears, while Tierra del Fuego reports the highest average delinquent loan amount in the country at approximately $4.78 million. Additionally, delinquency rates in the fintech sector, specifically virtual wallets, have surged from 7.3% in late 2024 to over 30% by mid-2026, highlighting a growing risk in digital credit markets.
