Argentina implements federal judicial reforms and new prosecutor system

Argentina is undergoing significant restructuring of its federal justice system. In Misiones, the Procuración General de la Nación has officially established the Misiones District Prosecutor's Office through Resolution PGN 59/26. This transition to an accusatory system will grant prosecutors exclusive control over investigations, a move intended to combat organized crime in a region where 90% of its borders are international frontiers with Paraguay and Brazil.

The new structure in Misiones will operate under the Posadas Federal Court of Appeals, featuring a Fiscal Unit in the capital and decentralized offices in Oberá, Eldorado, and Puerto Iguazú. Vivian Andrea Barbosa has been appointed to lead the district provisionally.

Concurrently, the Ministry of Justice is developing a broader reform project to reorganize the federal judiciary. Led by Minister Juan Bautista Mahiques, the proposal seeks to modify the Law of Organization of Federal Justice by redistributing courts and chambers. Key considerations include reducing the number of first-instance federal courts in Comodoro Py from 12 to eight and potentially shrinking the Federal Chamber of Criminal Cassation from 13 to nine members. The reform also aims to address judicial vacancies and limit the use of subrogations.
