Argentina investment slows due to electoral uncertainty

Political and electoral uncertainty in Argentina is slowing the arrival of new investments, according to Alejandro Díaz, CEO of AmCham Argentina. Speaking at the 62nd IDEA Colloquium, Díaz noted that while the private sector views the country as moving in the economic direction set by the government, the lack of clarity regarding the electoral system and future candidates remains a primary concern for businesses.

The impact of this uncertainty varies across industries. Sectors such as mining, oil and gas, agribusiness, and the knowledge economy show higher predictability for project planning. Conversely, other industries are currently re-evaluating their business models in response to economic opening. AmCham is monitoring 27 productive clusters, 20 of which still face questions regarding their future evolution.

Díaz also warned that the upcoming electoral process could lead to increased portfolio dollarization. He suggested that the economic team will need to implement measures to mitigate abrupt fluctuations in the exchange rate. Meanwhile, the country's risk premium continues to rise, reaching its highest level of the year.
